In this mini guide we are going to explore some alternative things to do in the middle part of the island for those looking to fully experience Rhodes’ “semi hidden” beauties. The following destinations are relatively close to each other and can easily be combined to create a unique and complete day in the island!
Sanatorium of Eleousa
One of the spookiest places in Rhodes is the deserted sanatorium of Eleousa. Back in 1947-1970 it used to be a hospital dedicated to patients with tuberculosis and its location was picked so they can be isolated from the rest of the city and not spread the disease. Later, Eleousa was known as a place where Italian army officers chose to build their resorts. Of course when they had to leave after the war, the whole place turned into an isolated ghost town and today still remains in a half-ruined state. Although it can be quite scary (especially during the night), those that are brave enough can explore or take some creepy photos in the abandoned buildings and the dense forest that surrounds them.
Valley of Butterflies
For the nature lovers who seek a true miracle of the earth, Butterfly Valley is a place that can’t be missed. It is the preferred residence for the butterfly species Panaxia Quadripunctaria which requires silence and the climate of this utopic natural paradise. Simply roaming through the leafy paths next to the river is by itself a relaxing activity that connects the visitors to their surroundings and adds to the variability of the island’s ecosystem.
A traditional village that is very rarely visited by tourists is the village of Theologos (Tholos) 7 km away from the airport. It stands out from all the tourist crowded places of Rhodes, as it is built on top of a hill, full of steep incline and decline walkways. It is ideal for a quick break and will surely be admired by those curious enough to feel the aura of a traditional Dodecanese village standing unchanged in the modern times.
These are in our opinion some of the most alternative and at the same time interesting things to do in the middle part of Rhodes, which combined or separate, have the power to create unique experiences and moments of joy!
